2016 Bayside Pirates Review.

The club scene began for the Pirates’ with the U14s in action in the Craig Foster Futsal Challenge on the Gold Coast. This was the fourth year in a row that the Pirates’ had entered teams into Australia’s largest club competition.

It was a mixed aged squad featuring many twelve year olds. The boys punched above their weight and beat the eventual Champions along the way in the round robin games, but they got knocked out in the Semi Finals. Two players also suffered broken wrists in the rough and tumble environment; something which none of the coaching staff or players, will forget in a hurry! The futsal was of a high standard and it was a great experience for the boys.

The State Club Championships were held in April at Caroline Springs. The Pirates fielded five teams: 10s, 12s, 13s, 16s and Girls 16s. It was another intense tournament with the 13s and Girls 15s reaching the Finals. The 13s won every round robin game, but went down to Futsal Ballarat 5-2 in the final. Adam Halliday was awarded the MVP for the age group. The 15 Girls fared better, beating Queensland’s Galaxy FC 1-0 in a thriller.

The Pirates’ first Womens F League campaign got under way in May and finished in August. It was a tough season for the women and many results did not go their way, with the team only winning two games, one of which was against the eventual champions, Galaxy FC. The squad is more experienced now and with some new signings, Head Coach, Sam Mlynarz, believes they can press on and reach the finals series in 2017.

In July, many of the Pirates’ women represented Victoria in the augural NZF Trans- Tasman Futsal Champions League. This series was held at the same time as the NZF National Youth Championships in Palmerston North. The Victorians played the New Zealand Womens Champions, Central - Manawatu and were beaten 3 games to nil. Another steep learning curve for the womens squad, something of which they hope to rectify in the next series.

Also in July, the JSL Cup was held at Cheltenham with the Pirates’ entering a 10s, 12s and 14s team. Despite their best efforts, none of the three teams made the finals.

Next up was the Ballarat Futsal Challenge in September. Four teams were entered, the 12s, 14s, Youth Boys and Girls 16s. The 14s made it to the Semi Finals and got knocked out, but the Girls 16s and the Youth Boys won their finals, in two thrilling games. In the Youth final, State representative, Aaran Dunbar, scored the winner against Futsal Ballarat with an absolutely incredible acute angled shot into the top right hand corner with 30 seconds to go. It was a pulsating game that deserved such a finish to end the match. Dunbar was later awarded the MVP and Golden Boot awards. Leon Martin received the Golden Boot in the 12s and Adam Halliday picked up his second MVP for the year and the Golden Boot in the 14s, all of which added to the gloss of a successful tournament.

In October the JSL Bayside League and JSL Premier League took place with a total of twelve Pirates’ teams in action. In the Bayside League, the 12s Cruisers and 14 Boys won their age groups. The 16 Girls finished the highest of the female teams and played the Boys 14s in the final, narrowly losing 6-5. In the Premier League, the 12s made the 3rd place play off, only to lose to the EFA Eagles. The 10s and 14s fielded younger players and despite winning some games, finished in the bottom half of the ladder. The Boys 17s carried on their good form by beating the Vic Vipers 6-5 in a nail biter to win the 2016 Champions title. The Womens team won their final, also beating the Vic Vipers. However, the match went to a Penalty Shoot Out and it was Goalkeeper Sophie Sierak that was the teams’ Heroine, saving two crucial shots before they could be crowned 2016 Champions.

2016 was a busy year for the Pirates and 2017 looks even busier, as the Girls 16s and Mens Youth teams head off to the 2017 Craig Foster Tournament on the Gold Coast in January and the Womens squad fly to Wellington in February for NZF’s National Womens Championships. Then in April the 2017 FFV Futsal State Club Championships take place. And that’s just the first quarter of 2017! But, before all that, there is the action packed FFA National Championships in Sydney featuring many Pirates' players and coaching staff. Good luck to all participants!
