2017 Craig Foster Review

The Pirates Youth performed with admirable character, narrowly losing two of its games.

The team, featuring a mixed aged group, took a 4-1 lead against Northern NSW's Just Futsal before capitulating by conceding three late goals in five minutes to draw the match. It was a cruel blow for the boys, but a valuable lesson in how to be focused for all eighty minutes of a match. Next up was the formidable Sunshine Coast. The Pirates' Boys were determined to redeem themselves, but despite a very good performance, it was not to be, losing 3-1.

The last game of their Round Robin matches was against Auckland Futsal. Both teams needed to win the match to progress to the Semi Finals. The New Zealanders started off brightly, by applying the pressure, but the Pirates were undeterred and absorbed the pressure well. It was only a penalty decision against the Pirates Goalkeeper, Nathan Meneses, that broke the deadlock. This seemed to spur the Pirates on and they went close on several occasions, but the Auckland 'Keeper was equal to the task.

The first half was action packed, but it went up a few notches in the second half. The Pirates went further behind through a good goal in a counter attack from Auckland, which made it difficult for the Melbourne side. Carrying injuries in the team was beginning to take affect, but they pressed on. The final eight minutes was frantic as the Pirates kept attacking the goal. The momentum was with them and they were finally rewarded a goal through Aaron Dunbar with two minutes to go. Despite having clear chances, not only to draw the match, but to win it, that second goal was elusive. Auckland hung on to win 2-1.

For some of the Pirates' players, it was their first experience at playing on a large sized court at this level. Encouraged by their performances, they want to go back in 2018! Great effort Guys.
